Correspondence (1863-64) to and from McWhinnie during his stay in hospitals discuss his medical care and his return to Conn. The collection also includes four diaries kept by McWhinnie: 19 Mar. 1859-3 Apr. 1860 and 10 Apr.-11 Dec. 1860 discussing his schooling in Suffield, Conn., church and lecture attendance, and religious reflections; 2 Sep. 1862-23 Apr. 1863 during his Civil War service in Washington, Md. and Va.; and 1865, as a student after his return at Brown University (Class of 1867). There are also two scrapbooks containing clippings on the war (including a few articles by McWhinnie), the army, and national and international events (1880-1901), in particular the assassinations of James Garfield and William McKinley.
